Brown sells AND 1 brand, marking first step to trim shoe portfolio
The big shoe sale has begun.
On Wednesday, Brown Shoe Co. announced that it was selling the basketball brand AND 1, making it the first brand to get the boot since the Clayton-based footwear company recently launched a review of its portfolio.
Brown Shoe procured the brand about six months ago as part of its acquisition of American Sporting Goods, based in California.
While the acquisition on the whole did help Brown Shoe expand its healthy living category with other brands such as Ryka and Avia, the AND 1 brand was not as good of a strategic fit, Diane Sullivan, the company's chief executive, told investors in a conference call.
"AND 1 didn't clearly align with our target strategy," she said. "As a brand with potential, we believe it's a better fit for a company that can dedicate their resources and needs to move it to the next level."
Brown Shoe is selling AND 1 for $55 million in cash to Galaxy International, a newly formed brand management company. The deal is expected to close within 45 days. Brown Shoe plans to use the proceeds to pay down debt.
