OK, I have everything down but have a question.
Can I still keep my own modified PHPBB forum and not use any of the php-nuke? Have it where I can just use the Nuke theme for my website only?

You could but then it would require your users registering 2x. If you asked me to do that i think I would say goodbye to your site and not come back.
That's the only thing, I already have a member list of 230 people.

The theme is only for PHP-Nuke so no it would have no effect on your PHPbb
Better to have a few people sign up again then to have to make them all register 2 times. I am telling you from vast experience, most people don't like to register 1 time. Asking them to register 2 times will be like asking most people to leave and not come back. Just some friendly advice.
