chmod to .666?

I am installing a theme from your website into my site, and it comes custom with a shoutbox that I would like to hook up.

But I have 100% no experiance with chmod(w/e that is)

Heres what the read me file said about the shout box.

Quote: :
-Last but not least, the shoutbox, no need to config on this, just make sure after uploading, chmod the shout.php to 666 and the
shout.txt to 777, thats it.
-Note: In order for the shoutbox to work, you will need to chmod both files
.

I have NO clue what that means and I'm not good with this stuff, so could someone please exaplin in perfect detail what this is? Also got a php file for the shoutbox, where do I place that?

The easiest way to chmod is thru you ftp, you can do this thru your cpanel but its a little more complicated. There are 3 main parts to chmod each one having its own numerical value. There is read, write, and execute. Then there are three groups that have access to this there is the owner, group, and the world. The numeric value for read is 4, the numeric value for write is 2, and the numeric value for execute is 1. The order is always the same for thier host groups. So if the readme is telling you to chmod one file to 666 then you would find that file right click it on most ftp's and go to properties for each of the groups you would only check read and write to give it a value of 666. For the other file you do the same find it and right click on the name go to properties you would check each one since 7 is the max value you can have for each group after checking each one you would then have a value of each to 777 then save your changes. There is alot more to it than this, this is only a simplied explination of how to chmod a file.

Nice, this helped more then you think, thanks for your effort in writing that.
Much appreciated.
